Diagnosing someone with dissociative identity disorder takes a great amount of time. it's estimated that people that suffer from dissociative identity disorder have spent about 7 years in any mental health institution  prior to accurate diagnosis, unfortunately for this disease this is very common. Because this list of symptoms relate to that of many other psychiatric diagnoses, in fact many people who suffer from dissociative identity disorder are diagnosed with a secondary disorder of depression, anxiety or a type of panic disorder 

Diagnosis

The following criteria is used to diagnose DID:​

​

​

1.) the individual has two or more distinct identities or personality states are present, each with its own relatively enduring pattern of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and self 



2.) At least two of these identities or personality states that recurrently take control or the persons behavior. 



3.) A person who cannot recall important information that is too extensive to be regular forgetfulness 



4.) the disturbances that occur is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance such as having a blackout or chaotic behavior during alcohol intoxication or any other general medical condition ( such as partial seizures)
